Another Reason People Invented "God" -- Absolution

we've all hurt people at one time or another.

some may have managed to keep it to the "made me feel bad" level, but others of us have hurt people severely.

this has almost surely been true down through the ages.. sometimes the people we hurt can't be asked for forgiveness.

Even that is an amazing concept and tends to push a person towards a belief in the supernatural.

I believe in a higher mind, operating at least at a local level. When I pass from town to town I see this in operation. An area does have a spirit, or invisible dimension of thought and feeling that I tap in to, which helps me to determine my place within the landscape.

This is partially forged by the architecture and partially by the energy of others moving through the area.

Personally, I still believe in a higher intelligence, beyond our own, call it what you will

I have also attempted to find research on the earliest origins of the god idea, the worship urge, and religion.

Were any of you "Self righteous" in the begining?

i know i was!------------ in my "20s" there was no one more "self righteous" then me.

i thought everyone should be pioneering since we were so close to 1975!.

i actully had a card make up to hand to people saying "have sword will travel"------on the bottom it said a a a {available after armageddon} because i tought anyone who got married before then was a slacker.. what a "jerk" i was!!!.

I did have a high opinion of myself and at times could be rather hard on others.

I remember when my stepfather had a serious accident, he nearly died and took a blood transfusion (he was not a JW by the way).

I had the cheek to condemn him before the family for breaking one of God's commandments - what the hell was I thinking of ?

I also told a charity worker that as a practising JW I did not believe in giving money to other religious organizations (she was working for Christian Aid I believe) as they were condemned by Jehovah for being part of Babylon The Great To her credit she took out her Bible and asked me where it actually said that... I walked away feeling internally smug.

That is how twisted up my brain was at the time.

I can honestly say, that I no longer think or feel the way I used to.

i've been reading the forums for a while now, as a guest, and have decided that i need a counterbalance to the indoctrination i am recieving.

i was raised pagan, hearing the witnesses were a cult like morminism and islam.

for anyone who is a catholic stop reading now - i'm about to mini vent.

i don't doubt that the recently departed pope had many redeeming qualities and this post has nowt to do with him as a person.

i cannot get away from the fact that the pomp and ceremony of the catholic church (including the regalia) is so far away from the humble woodcarvers son and his example.

i wanted to reply immediately about tolerance and to respect another religion.

For me, I like to examine a person based around their ethics, rather than their religion.

I think most humans can agree upon a common code of behaviour to ensure our collective rights, aside from the clearly psychotic

So, before learning why a man decides to follow Kabbalah, for instance, I view that person as a fellow human and see where our minds meet before senseless "bashing" of his ideas.

Religion as an abstract concept is fair game though and deserves scrutiny.

Afterall, religion ticks at the heart of many societies that have persecuted their neighbours " in the name of ".

some advice about meeting door to door jws

hi im new here and found this forum via a search engine - i am a practicing christian and the other day i had a knock on the door - got into an interesting conversation with two jws and as i didnt have much time invited them back - in the meantime they had posted a booklet on the trinity or there version of it and when they came back the novice had been replaced by someone who had obviously had a lot more experience at talking to christians

i didnt want to get into a bible debate - and asked them about their salvation and how they knew they were saved - but they just seemed to be reading from a different script than me - as much as i tried we ended up batting bible texts back and forth

anyway to sum up - they want to come back to do a bible study on any topic i choose

you know, they prepared what they are going to tell you. no matter what you say, they'll keep switching back to their topic. after all, that's the topic they prepared.

That is true, but if you have enough of an assertive character and keep switching it back to your own subject, it can work. This worked with a sister I spoke to last week and she had no choice but to keep on my track. She attempted to bounce me through a few scriptures, but I saw what she was trying to do, so remained one step ahead. I do mean assertive in a kind way as well - I played to her heart, rather than her mind. She is a well established and well versed sister, so I know it is possible as long as you keep your cool and know the game in advance.
